The Purpose of Psychological Testing is to create Understanding. Through testing and interviews and review of historical information, Psychologists are able to define issues and create specific and individualized treatment recommendations to become aware of issues and solve problems. The report and recommendations become a Road Map for treatment. It tells the story of how the client go to this point, and most importantly, what to do Next. Doctors, Therapists, treatment programs, and schools use these recommendations to create an effective path towards the best possible outcome.
From the American Psychological Association: "If a person is having problems at work or school, or in personal relationships, tests can help a psychologist understand whether he or she might have issues with anger management or interpersonal skills, or certain personality traits that contribute to the problem. Psychological tests are not one-size-fits-all. Psychologists pick and choose a specific set of assessments and tests for each individual client. And not just anyone can perform a psychological evaluation. Licensed Psychologists are expertly trained to administer assessments and tests and interpret the results."
The testing Psychologist will write a report that may recommend medications, therapy, or other specific treatments. Families will then come back to get feedback and leave with the report that will guide treatment, like GPS, even better than a road map!
